South Carlsbad State Beach is the most popular of the two Beaches. This beautiful San Diego beach features picnicking, fishing, skin diving, surfing, swimming and camping! There is a large campground up on top of the bluff that is very popular, especially in the summer, with a staircase leading down to the beach.
Getting There: The beach is located 3 miles south of Carlsbad on CARLSBAD BLVD. Take INTERSTATE 5, exit POINSETTIA LN. Go west to CARLSBAD BLVD. Turn Right (north) onto CARLSBAD BLVD. Make a legal U-Turn at Breakwater Rd. (First Light). Drive SOUTH on CARLSBAD BLVD. Continue to campground entrance on right.
Campground Address: 7201 Carlsbad Blvd. Carlsbad, CA 92008 NOTE: The campground entrance is not accessible directly from Poinsettia Ln. Drivers must continue NORTH on CARLSBAD BLVD and make the first legal U-Turn at Breakwater Rd.
The 220 site campground offers showers that are operated by the use of tokens. You can get tokens from machines at the ranger station or the campfire center and they are also available at check-in. Oh, and by the way, make reservations far in advance, this is a popular camping area.
There is a camp store located near the campground entrance. It’s only open during peak season, March thru October and it pretty much provides all the amenities a camper may need. They have boogie boards, fishing gear, firewood and some RV supplies.
Getting There: The beach is located on Carlsbad Boulevard, Highway S21 at Tamarack in Carlsbad at the foot of coastal bluffs. From the 5 FWY take Cannon Road, Tamarack Avenue or Carlsbad Village Drive west to Pacific Coast Hwy.
It’s a small beach but offers fishing, beachcombing, swimming, scuba diving and surfing. The most crowded spots are Terramar (near the lagoon), Warm Water Jetty (by the large electric power plant) and Tamarack (near its namesake street). These spots are most popular with surfers.
Want to learn to surf? So Cal Surf Lessons offer private surf lessons, surf camps, and surfboard / bodyboard rentals at Carlsbad beaches. For more info call 760-672-2770 or visit their website at socalsurflessons.com
You’ll find: picnic areas, restrooms, lifeguards and a long wide pedestrian walkway. No dogs allowed on the beach or the beach boardwalk but they are allowed on the upper pathways. Legoland is just East of the freeway on Cannon Road for the kiddies in tow and there are quite a few hotels and eateries in Carlsbad.

My Sister-in-law, Susie has lived in Carlsbad for many years. She shared some hidden treasures right in the village of Carlsbad. Her favorite restaurants are:

Her favorites hotels are: Ocean Palms Beach Resort and Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort.
The stairs to the beach are right across the street from Ocean Palms Beach Resort. Suite rooms with full kitchens, tropical landscaping and they also have a bar-be-que to use by the pool. She calls this one a gem!
Thank you Susie for your insider-tips!
